Evolution of IMF By induced asymmetries during substorms: Superposed epoch analysis at geosynchronous orbit

چکیده

The B y component of the magnetic field inside magnetosphere is positively correlated with Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). This leads to asymmetries in aurora, plasma convection and electric currents between northern southern hemispheres It has been demonstrated that conjugate locations ionosphere become less displaced during magnetospheric substorms, which are associated enhanced reconnection near-Earth tail. Here we directly address how average magnetotail evolves relative substorm onset by performing a superposed epoch analysis observed at nightside geosynchronous orbit periods dominant IMF . observations demonstrate | increases loading phase prior onset. maximizes expansion subsequently reduced remaining unloading phase. trends more pronounced using lists on identify stronger substorms. Since dayside dominates over tail phase, whereas results build up low agreement previous case studies auroral features.

Superposed epoch analysis of a whistler instability criterion at geosynchronous orbit during geomagnetic storms

accelerating relativistic outer-belt electrons in the aftermath of geomagnetic storms. Using measurements from the Los Alamos Magnetospheric Plasma Analyzers in geosynchronous orbit, we perform a superposed-epoch study of the storm-time behavior of the inferred plasma-sheet whistler growth parameter. Separate analyses are done for storms that result in strong relativistic electron enhancements ...

No evidence for externally triggered substorms based on superposed epoch analysis of IMF Bz

[1] Superposed epoch analyses have shown that, on average, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns northward close to substorm onset. This has been commonly accepted as evidence for the substorm onset being triggered by a rapid northward turning of the IMF. Here we show that the tendency arises in any superposed epoch analysis of the IMF in which event onset is biased to occur for southwa...

Superposed epoch analysis of the ionospheric convection evolution during substorms: onset latitude dependence

Using data from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) we investigate the ionospheric convection response to magnetospheric substorms. Substorms were identified using the Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument on board the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) spacecraft, and were then binned according to the magnetic latitude of their onset. A superposed epoch analys...

A statistical study of magnetic dipolarization for sawtooth events and isolated substorms at geosynchronous orbit with GOES data

We investigate whether the dipolarization process during sawtooth events is global or not through an examination of the local time distribution of the magnetic tilt angle (i.e. the angle between the B vector and the equatorial plane in dipole VDH coordinates) at geostationary orbit. From the statistical analysis of 207 individual teeth and 212 isolated substorms, we find that individual teeth f...

Bulk plasma properties at geosynchronous orbit

[1] We present a comprehensive study of plasma properties at geosynchronous orbit for electron and ion energies between 1 eV and 45 keV, between 1990 and 2001. The variations of temperature and density are analyzed as functions of local time, magnetospheric convection strength, and the strength of the ring current. Various parameters derived from temperature and density are calculated to elucid...
